Our steward and volunteers work to restore and preserve this native, remnant prairie. This unique ecosystem provides a thriving habitat for rare plants, insects, birds, reptiles and many other species.
We work closely with the Illinois Nature Preserves Commission whose mission is to assist private and public landowners in protecting high quality natural areas and habitats of endangered and threatened species; in perpetuity. The Commission promotes the preservation of these significant lands and provides leadership in their stewardship, management and protection.
| The Nature Conservancy, dedicated to conserving lands and waters on which all life depends, also works with us. Santa Fe Prairie is a site for the Biodiversity Monitoring Project from Lincoln Park Zoo. They have been monitoring wildlife at the prairie since 2009. Cameras are set up four times a year for a month each time to monitor which species live where, and the Urban Wildlife institute uses that information to make recommendations for wildlife friendly design and policy. | ![]() |
![]() | Through the efforts of our wonderful volunteers, including local citizens, Scouts, and other groups, we strive to make Santa Fe Prairie Prairie an enjoyable recreational spot that offers a scenic backdrop for a short hike, birdwatching, and photography. We also maintain the Caboose as a learning center where visitors can learn more about the prairie, as well as the railroad which donated the caboose as well as the land on which Santa Fe rests. |
